How To Correctly Store Your Rugs

by Leon Richards

Rugs are a great way to decorate your home and to protect your hardwood floors. If you are redecorating or if you are downsizing, and you need to put your rugs away for a while, you need to make sure that you store your rugs properly in your self storage unit.

Clean Them

First, you need to clean your rugs.  You can clean your rugs by first vacuuming them; this should remove most of the surface dust from your rugs. After that, you may want to take your rug outside and beat the dust out of them. Dust can get stuck in your rugs, and beating the dust out is one way to effectively clean them.

As you clean and vacuum your rugs, make sure to clean both sides of the rug. Dirt and dander can get stuck on both sides of your rugs.

If you spot any stains on your rugs, you can use a gentle detergent as a spot cleaner to remove the stain. Just make sure that you allow the rug to dry first.

Cleaning your rugs will help keep pests away from your rugs when you put them in your storage unit.

Protect Them

Second, you need to protect your rugs before you put them into storage. To protect your rugs, apply an insect repellant to both sides of the rug. The insect repellent should be specifically formulated for rugs. Rugs that are made from natural fibers are especially vulnerable to insect damage.

When you put your rug into storage, you also need to protect your rug from water as well. Water can moisture can really damage your rug. That is why you need to make sure that your rug is evaluated from the ground, where it can encounter moisture from the floor, when you put your rug in your storage unit.

Wrap Them Up

You will need to wrap up your rug, which should result in damage. You don't want to fold your rugs, though. Folding your rugs can leave your rugs with damaging creases and cracks, which is why you need to role your rug up.

If you have a fragile rug, you are going to want to role it up so that the pile is on the outside of the rug. If your rug is in good condition, you are going to want to wrap it up so that the pile is on the inside of the rug.

Keep It Dry & Dark

Finally, make sure that the storage location is both dark and dry. A dark, dry storage unit is the perfect place to store your rugs. Rent a climate-controlled storage unit so the temperature and humidity are consistent throughout the year. This is one of the best ways to protect your rugs. Also, make sure to store your rug up off the floor and don't stack anything else on top of it. Following these simple steps will ensure that your rug makes it through its time in storage safely.
