Four Tips for Moving Quickly

by Leon Richards

Ideally, you'll have lots of time to prepare for a move. However, that is not always the case. Sometimes a new home comes up quickly, or a job change or family situation dictates that a move needs to happen fast. If you find yourself needing to move quickly, here are a few things that you can do to make the process go as smoothly as possible in a short period of time.

Take Care of the Logistics

The first thing that you need to do is take care of the logistics. You need to call up a few moving companies and find one that can work with you in a short period of time.

Since you are moving in a short time period, you may want to try to get all the help that you can get. Try to find a company who can offer both a moving truck and moving services on the day of the move. If you are really pressed for time, look for a company that can help you pack things up as well.

Even if you are short on time, take a few hours to call a couple moving companies, such as Warners Moving & Storage, so you can find the one that can offer you the services you need at a price you can afford. Don't put this task off as movers can get booked quickly.

Do a Quick Sort of Your Home

When you have to move quickly, you don't have weeks to go through your home and think carefully about what you want to keep and what you don't need. When you need to move quickly, you need to do a quick sort of your home.

Get together boxes and set up three areas in your home: donate, recycle, and throw away. Go through each room and think about what you practically need to keep. Get rid of items like trash and clutter. You should also toss out something if you can't remember when the last time you used the item or if it won't fit in your new home.

Don't overthink this process; set a timer for each room and give yourself a set amount of time to go through each room. Take an evening for this process, and then arrange to have the donate, recycle, and throw-away items dealt with.

Just Pack It Up

After a quick sort of your home, start packing. As you pack, don't worry about packing everything up perfectly. You don't need to have a theme for each box or go through everything in your home.

Pack up items and fill up each box with whatever will fit. Use items like soft, towels, and t-shirts to wrap up glass items and vases when you don't have enough bubble wrap on hand.

Pack one box at a time, fill it up, write what is in the box, tape it, and move on. This isn't the time for complex packing schemes; just get it done.

Moving quickly can be done. The first thing you need to do is arrange for a moving company to assist with the move. Then, you need to spend a few hours quickly getting rid of trash, clutter, and items that will not fit in your new home. Lastly, move onto packing up your home. Pack up one box at a time and label what is inside, but don't worry about a fancy organizations system. Just get it done so you'll be ready to move when the movers show up.
