4 Ways To Make The Morning AFTER Your Move Not Suck {Or, Lessons We Learned The Hard Way}

by Leon Richards

Moving is never fun. Whether you hire a moving company or beg friends and family, the process of packing up your entire life, moving it to another location, and unpacking it again is exhausting. There are, however, a few tips to make the process less painful, especially the morning after.

1. Coffee: Whether you are a coffee drinker or simply live with one, there is nothing worse than waking up to no coffee. Nothing. Packing a designated box of coffee supplies is critical to surviving the morning after a move. First and foremost, you'll need your coffee pot. Pack it securely, because nothing would be worse than a broken coffee pot. Be sure to pack everything you need to make a cup of hot Joe, from cream and sugar to cups and spoons. If you forget a spoon, a screw driver will work in a pinch. It's not pretty, but caffeine is one of life's necessities.

2. Paper Products: No one wants to talk about the elephant in the room, but we are going there. You need to pack toilet paper. Chances are high that your new place won't have any and, well, no one wants to use the bathroom in the morning without it. Enough said.

3. Well-Labeled Boxes: There is nothing more frustrating the day after a move than poorly labeled boxes (items #1 and #2 above notwithstanding). Unpacking can be either an efficient, smoothly run process or it can be a haphazard hot mess. It all boils down to the labeling. Anyone can scribble the word 'bedroom' on a box, but what does that really tell anyone? An itemized list, taped conveniently to the side of each box, allows anyone to know where the contents of the box go. Taking the time before the movers arrive to label all your boxes the right way can save you much frustration later.

4. Lift with Your Legs: Even if you hire the best moving company to help you on your big day, you are still on your own the morning after. Remember to take care of yourself by lifting heavy items with your legs (or finding a friend to lift with you), drinking plenty of water, and taking your over-the-counter pain reliever of choice. Moving is not a race, but rather a slow-and-steady event.
