Weird (But Reasonable) Moving Laws By Which Moving Companies Must Abide

by Leon Richards

As you begin your moving process, you should know that there are a number of restrictions by which moving companies must abide. Granted, your move may be standard with nothing unusual at all happening, but just in case you have questions about moving things, there are several things movers are not legally allowed to move. They are as follows.

Anything in Excess of the Weight per Axle Restrictions

Trucks, including moving trucks, cannot carry or transport anything in excess of the "weight per axle" rule. Doing so puts the moving company at risk. They could lose their business licenses, and the excess weight could cause axle breaks and roadside accidents. If you are not sure that the item or items in question can meet this requirement, ask your moving company. They can either let you know on the spot or do some digging to find your answer.

Exotic Animals

Some people own tigers, monkeys, lions, wolves, bears, etc. Moving companies DO NOT move caged, wild, and/or exotic animals of any size, and definitely not the aforementioned animals. There is too much liability involved and not enough insurance to cover harm to the animals and/or harm to people if one or more of the cages break(s) open. You will need to use whatever animal moving service the local moving service uses instead.

Marijuana Plants

Marijuana and other illegal street drugs are a big, fat "no" when it comes to moving companies. It is rightly so. They do not need to be arrested, blacklisted, and spend decades in jail for transporting any drug, even when said drug is made legal in that state. The federal department of transportation still regulates licenses, truck titles, and road regulations practices, and moving falls under federal rule.

Therefore, all trucks that want to operate on the highway need clearance from this department. If you are living in or moving around in a state where marijuana is legal, you still cannot ask or hire a moving company to move the plants, drug, or paraphernalia. You will have to move that stuff on your own (if you own a medical marijuana dispensary, of course).

People

Maybe you are so attached to your stuff that you want to ride in the back of the moving truck to keep an eye on it. Unfortunately, this is also illegal. It puts your life in jeopardy because the backs of most trucks get too hot, you cannot get out on your own, and if the truck gets into an accident, you could be trapped. It is also considered (technically) human trafficking, even though you are not a prisoner nor were you abducted. No moving company will agree to have you sit in the back of the truck, so just do not ask.
